The Italian Coast Guard has launched an investigation into a collision between the two ships off Sicily’s eastern coast, near Capo Passero.


The incident occurred on April 22, 2024, and involved the Peter Doehle-managed containership EF Olivia, weighing 42,000 dwt, and the Turkish-owned general cargo ship Hayriye Ana.


Both ships suffered minor damage, with the EF Olivia sustaining a hull break midships at or below the waterline.


The collision occurred around 14 miles from Capo Passero, leading to a swift response from the Italian National Operations Center.


The containership EF Olivia, while en route to the Italian port of Augusta, was showing signals of restricted maneuverability as it headed North.


The vessel, built in 2006 and registered in Portugal, has an overall length of 722 feet (220 meters) and a capacity of 3,100 TEUs.


On the other hand, the Hayriye Ana, an 8,300 dwt general cargo ship registered in Liberia, departed from Istanbul on April 19, 2024, for A Coruna, Spain.


Built-in 2009, the vessel has a history of deficiencies found during recent inspections, including problems with its VDR (Voyage Data Recorder), as documented by Chinese officials in November 2023 and Greek inspectors in January 2024.


After receiving the collision report, the Guardia Costiera immediately dispatched a helicopter, airplane and vessel to the scene.


They continue monitoring the vessel’s movement, and no pollution has been detected.


While the cause of the crash is still unknown, the first footage from the scene showed no extreme weather or heavy seas.
