SR Shipping Limited

After an awful 31-day journey at the hands of Somali pirates, the Bangladeshi-flagged cargo vessel MV Abdullah and its 23 crew members have arrived safely at Al Hamriya Port in Dubai.

The ship’s arrival on Sunday brought an end to a terrible chapter that began on March 12 when it was hijacked in the Indian Ocean while en route from Maputo, Mozambique, to the United Arab Emirates.

According to sources, the ship arrived at the port at 4:30 p.m. (Bangladesh time), under the close surveillance of officials and maritime tracking systems such as the Marine Traffic website.

Mizanul Islam, a spokeswoman for Kabir Group, the parent company of SR Shipping and the owner of the MV Abdullah, verified the vessel’s safe arrival.

The tragedy began when Somali pirates boarded the MV Abdullah and took control of the vessel, keeping 23 crew members hostage.

The ship, loaded with 55,000 tons of coal, was then redirected to the coast of Somalia, where the pirates continued changing positions to avoid authorities.

The pirates reportedly demanded a ransom of $5 million (Tk 55 crore) during the early stages of negotiations for the crew’s release, according to a Somali news site.

The process entailed several discussions, with the ship’s owners, SR Shipping Limited, working relentlessly to ensure the crew’s safe return.

Following nearly a month of uncertainty and suspense, the crew was ultimately released on April 13.

The ship then began its journey to the United Arab Emirates, arriving at Al Hamriya Port after eight days of navigation.

Captain Mohammad Abdur Rashid stated that all 23 crew members were safe and sound.

He added that two crew members will fly back to Bangladesh, while the others will remain on board to await the end of the unloading procedure.

SR Shipping Limited, a significant operator in Bangladesh’s shipping industry, operates ocean-going merchant ships, including the MV Abdullah.

The vessel has a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 45,653 tons and measures 185.74 meters in length and 30.4 meters in width, demonstrating the company’s dedication to maritime transit.

The safe arrival of the MV Abdullah and its crew represents a victory over difficulties and demonstrates the courage of mariners facing the dangers of piracy on the high seas.

Despite the difficulties posed by contemporary piracy, the maritime community commemorates the crew members’ reunion with their loved ones and getting ready for their next journey.
